• Impact Factor and 5-YR Impact Factor are computed using the following formulas:

5YR-Impact Factor = (# Citations in Year N to articles published by Journal in Years N-5 through N-1) / (# Articles Published by Journal in Years N-5 through N-1)


The Impact Factor and the 5-YR Impact Factor are calculated using data from the Web of Science. Of course, the value of impact factor depends on how one defines "article" as well as how one defines "citation". Details on these definitions can be found in the Wikipedia article on Impact Factor. Impact Factors are reported in the Journal Citation Reports (JCR), an annual publication by Clarivate Analytics, a for-profit company. One can independently verify the number of citable items for a given journal on the Web of Science. However, the number of citations is extracted not from the Web of Science database, but from a dedicated JCR database, which is not accessible to the general public. Consequently, the commonly used "JCR Impact Factor" is a proprietary value, which is defined and calculated by Clarivate Analytics and cannot be verified by external users.

• The Mathematical Citation Quotient (MCQ) is MathSciNet's alternative to the Impact Factor. The MCQ of a journal is computed over a 5-year period using the same formula as for the 5-Year Impact Factor:

MCQ = (# Citations in Year N to articles published by Journal in Years N-5 through N-1) / (# Articles Published by Journal in Years N-5 through N-1)


However, MCQ is computed using MathSciNet data in place of Clarivate Analytics's JCR database. MathSciNet is supported by the American Mathematical Society, and the citation data used to compute the MCQ is transparent and visible to anyone with access to MathSciNet. Searching for a journal on MathSciNet will display a page containing a profile for the journal that includes the MCQ with links to all the relevant citation data in the MathSciNet database.




Open Access

Open Access in this table is defined as "fully open access"; that is, all articles from the journal are freely available online without any subscription fees or page charges to authors. This excludes "delayed open access", where articles are subscription-only for a certain number of years before becoming open access, and "hybrid open access", where authors may opt to pay page charges in order make their article open access.
